How to use
- Measure length and width in feet.
- Enter the depth you want after compaction, in inches.
- Enter the mix weight in pounds per square yard for each inch of depth. Ask the supplier if you do not have it.
- Press Calculate. The hero is tons. Square yards are shown so you can match a quote written that way.
How it's calculated
Square yards = length × width ÷ 9.
Tons = square yards × depth in inches × pounds per square yard per inch ÷ 2,000. Concrete ordered by the cubic yard is a different material and a different unit. That calculator is on ClearQuip.
Worked example
A driveway 40 feet by 12 feet is 480 square feet, or about 53.33 square yards. At 3 inches and 110 pounds per square yard per inch: 53.33 × 3 × 110 ÷ 2,000 = 8.8 tons. At 100 pounds instead of 110, the same driveway is 8.0 tons.
Assumptions
A rectangle at one depth. A thickened edge, a crown, or compaction loss beyond the depth you typed is not added. The weight is the supplier's number.
FAQ
What number should I type for the mix?
The one the plant gives you for that mix, in pounds per square yard per inch. Do not borrow a neighbor's gravel density.
Is this gravel or asphalt?
The formula is the same. The weight you type is what makes it one or the other.
Why square yards?
Many paving quotes speak in square yards. The page shows that area beside the tons.
Does depth mean loose stone before it is rolled?
Enter the depth you intend to have after compaction if that is what the quote prices. If the supplier wants loose depth, use that number instead and keep the meaning consistent.
