How to use
- Enter the patio length and width in feet.
- Enter the paver face in inches. Joint is the gap you will leave. Use zero if the pavers butt together.
- Set waste for cuts. Ten percent is in the box as a starting point for a simple rectangle with a few cuts.
- Press Calculate. Buy the piece count. Use the edge length for restraint.
How it's calculated
Module area in square feet = (paver width + joint) × (paver length + joint) ÷ 144. Patio area = length × width.
Pavers = area ÷ module × (1 + waste), rounded up. Edge = 2 × (length + width), in feet. The edge does not include waste.
Worked example
A 10 by 12 foot patio is 120 square feet, with 44 feet of edge. Pavers that are 6 by 9 inches with no joint cover 0.375 square feet each, so the raw count is 320. At 10 percent waste the order rounds up from 352 to 352 pieces. Add a joint and the module grows, so the count falls.
Assumptions
One rectangular field and one paver size. A herringbone layout may need more waste than the percent you typed. Border pavers of a different size are not in the count.
FAQ
Why does a wider joint lower the count?
Each unit claims a larger square of the grid, so fewer units fill the patio. You still buy joint sand separately.
Is the edge the same as a border course?
The edge is the perimeter in feet. A border course uses that length divided by the border paver's length, which depends on the unit you choose for the border.
Can I mix paver sizes?
Run the calculator once per size and add the orders. One module cannot describe two faces.
How is this different from the tile calculator?
Tile reports a tile count for an area. This page also reports the patio perimeter for edging.
