Plywood sheet calculator

Sheets from area, sheet size, and waste

Plywood and other panels are ordered by the sheet. A 4 by 8 sheet is 32 square feet, but not every panel is that size. This page divides your area by the sheet width times the sheet length you enter, applies waste, and rounds up.

Fill in the fields and press Calculate.

Disclaimer: A sheet count from area and waste. It does not draw a cut list.

How to use

  1. Enter the square feet you need to cover.
  2. Confirm the sheet size. The boxes start at 4 feet by 8 feet.
  3. Set waste for cuts. Ten percent is a starting value, not a rule for every layout.
  4. Press Calculate and buy the whole-sheet count.

How it's calculated

One sheet = width × length, in square feet. Area to buy = covered area × (1 + waste ÷ 100).

Sheets = area to buy ÷ one sheet, rounded up. Offcuts that happen to fit another cut are not modeled. If your layout nests well, lower the waste percent.

Worked example

300 square feet at 10 percent waste is 330 square feet. A 4 by 8 sheet is 32 square feet, so 330 ÷ 32 = 10.31, which rounds up to 11 sheets. An area of 320 square feet with no waste is exactly 10 sheets of that size.

Assumptions

One sheet size. Drywall sheets on ClearQuip use a similar round-up, with openings subtracted from walls. This page starts from an area you already netted out.

FAQ

Are 4x8 sheets always 32 square feet?

A full 4 by 8 panel is 32 square feet. If the rack sells 4 by 10, change the length to 10. The area becomes 40.

Does the grain direction matter?

It changes how you cut, which can change waste. Raise or lower the waste percent to match the layout. The page does not rotate panels for you.

What about thickness?

Thickness does not change how many sheets cover an area. It changes which stack you buy.

Can I enter square meters?

Convert to square feet first, and enter the sheet in feet. Mixing units will not be detected.
