How to use
- Measure the lawn or add the rectangular sections, and enter the total square feet.
- Enter one piece's length and width in inches, from the farm's cut.
- Set a waste percent for curves and trimming. Five percent is only a starting value in the box.
- Press Calculate and order the whole-piece count.
How it's calculated
One piece covers length × width ÷ 144 square feet. Raw pieces = lawn area ÷ that coverage.
Pieces to order = raw pieces × (1 + waste ÷ 100), rounded up. You cannot buy a fraction of a roll.
Worked example
500 square feet of lawn, with pieces 24 inches by 16 inches, is 2.667 square feet per piece. Raw count is 500 ÷ 2.667 = 187.5 pieces. At 5 percent waste that is 196.875, which rounds up to 197 pieces.
Assumptions
Pieces are identical rectangles. Irregular beds should be measured into the area first. The area calculator on this site handles triangles and circles if you need those square feet.
FAQ
What if sod is sold by the pallet?
Divide the piece count by the pieces per pallet printed on the order sheet, then round up to a full pallet.
Is 5 percent enough waste?
It is a box default, not a rule. Curves and a lot of trimming need more. A simple rectangle may need less.
Do I enter the roll in feet?
No. The piece boxes are inches, because cuts are usually described that way. 2 feet is 24 inches.
Does this include soil?
No. It counts sod pieces only.
