How to use
- Measure the lawn, or add the rectangles on the square-footage calculator and bring the total here.
- Read the bag. If it says one pound covers 200 square feet, type 200. If it says a 5-pound bag covers 1,000 square feet, that is also 200 square feet per pound.
- Add an extra percent if you want spare seed for thin spots. Zero is allowed.
- Press Calculate. The hero is pounds.
How it's calculated
Pounds = area × (1 + extra percent ÷ 100) ÷ square feet per pound.
There is no species table. A shady mix and a sun mix can print different coverages on purpose. Type the number on the bag you are buying.
Worked example
Two thousand square feet at 200 square feet per pound, plus 10 percent extra: 2,000 × 1.10 ÷ 200 = 11 pounds. At the same coverage with no extra, the lawn needs 10 pounds.
Assumptions
One coverage for the whole lawn. Spots you will seed heavier should be entered as a higher extra percent or as a second run. The page does not convert a bag weight into pounds for you beyond the coverage you already reduced to square feet per pound.
FAQ
What if the bag lists a range?
New lawns and overseeding often have different rates. Type the rate that matches the job you are doing.
Is this the same as sod?
No. Sod is pieces of turf with a length and a width. Seed is pounds from a coverage rate.
Can the extra percent be zero?
Yes. Zero means you order exactly the area divided by the coverage.
Does this include fertilizer?
No. Fertilizer has its own bag rate. Do not type a fertilizer number into the seed coverage box.
